Dr. Kneer has extensive experience assessing:

Assessment can also be valuable when a student is struggling despite considerable effort, when previous supports haven’t fully explained what’s happening, or when families want a clearer understanding of an individual’s unique learning profile.

Dr. Kneer’s passion is helping individuals understand both their strengths and their areas of difficulty.

An assessment isn’t simply about obtaining a diagnosis or a set of test scores. The numbers matter, but so does understanding what those results mean for the person behind them.

Dr. Kneer brings decades of experience in psychometrics, education, psychology, and assessment to the process. He looks carefully at patterns across cognitive, academic, behavioural, and emotional functioning to develop a comprehensive understanding of the individual.

The goal is clarity that can actually be used—to better understand how someone learns, identify appropriate supports, guide recommendations, and help individuals and families make informed decisions about what comes next.

Assessment is a process of putting the pieces together.

Depending on the reason for referral, Dr. Kneer may examine areas such as cognitive abilities, academic skills, attention and executive functioning, behaviour, emotional functioning, developmental history, and other factors that may be contributing to current difficulties.

His extensive experience allows him to consider not only individual test results, but also the patterns between them. This can be particularly valuable when someone’s challenges don’t have an obvious explanation or when several factors may be contributing at once.

Ultimately, the aim is to leave individuals and families with something much more useful than a label: a clearer understanding of the person’s unique profile and meaningful recommendations for moving forward.

Dr. Kneer has assessment experience spanning the lifespan, from preschool-aged children through adulthood.

Over the course of his career, he has completed assessments in private practice and in collaboration with schools, agencies, school districts, and post-secondary institutions, giving him extensive familiarity with learning and psychological needs across different developmental and educational settings.

Dr. Kneer earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, with a minor in Counselling, from the University of Arizona in 1994.

During his doctoral training, he conducted and published research on Fuzzy Trace Theory and children’s memory development with his mentor, Dr. Charles Brainerd.

Much of Dr. Kneer’s career has been spent as a K–12 school psychologist, providing him with extensive experience at the intersection of psychology, learning, development, and education. He also led the Quality Assurance Program at the Northern Ontario Assessment and Resource Centre.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kneer continues to teach part-time at Laurentian University, where he teaches Fundamentals of Psychometrics and Psychology of Education.

Across more than three decades of practice and 3,000+ assessments, his work has remained focused on helping individuals better understand how they learn, where they excel, where they struggle, and what supports may help them succeed.
