“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” — Carl Rogers
Dr. Andrea Guthrie is a Clinical and Counselling Psychologist and the founder of Lakeview Psychology.
At the heart of her work is a belief that two things can be true at once: we can have compassion for why we are the way we are, and still take responsibility for creating the life we want.
Dr. Guthrie works with children, adolescents, and adults navigating mental health concerns, difficult life experiences, relationship patterns, transitions, and periods when life simply isn’t feeling the way they want it to. Her approach is warm and deeply human, while also being active and purposeful. Therapy isn’t about endlessly analyzing what’s wrong. It’s about understanding yourself well enough to begin doing something differently.
Dr. Guthrie works with clients experiencing a broad range of concerns, including:
With experience across many clinical settings and stages of life, Dr. Guthrie has learned that no single therapeutic approach is right for every person.
Her work is integrative, drawing from Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy for Anxiety Disorders, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Supportive Psychotherapy, Client-Centred Therapy, and Experiential Therapy.
What that means in practice is that the therapy is shaped around the person—not the other way around.
For one client, meaningful progress might involve learning concrete strategies to manage anxiety or face something they’ve been avoiding. For another, it may mean understanding why the same emotional or relationship pattern keeps repeating. Often, the most effective work involves both: developing insight into why something is happening while also learning how to respond differently when it does.
Dr. Guthrie doesn’t believe that change comes from judging ourselves into becoming different.
She starts from the assumption that most of us are doing the best we can with the experiences, resources, and understanding available to us at a particular moment. There are reasons we develop the patterns we do—even when those patterns eventually stop serving us.
Understanding those reasons creates compassion. But compassion doesn’t mean staying stuck.
Dr. Guthrie believes meaningful growth happens in the balance between self-compassion and accountability: understanding yourself without excusing what needs to change, and challenging yourself without losing kindness toward the person doing the changing.
Therapy with Dr. Guthrie is therefore both supportive and active. There is room to understand your history, relationships, emotions, and patterns, but there is also an ongoing focus on where you want to go from here.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s greater awareness, greater flexibility, and the ability to make choices that move your life closer to the way you want to live it.
Dr. Guthrie is registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) to provide psychological services to children, adolescents, and adults, allowing her to work with individuals across the lifespan.
Her broad clinical background can be particularly valuable when concerns don’t fit neatly into one category or when several areas of life—emotions, relationships, family, behaviour, and past experiences—are interacting at once.
Dr. Guthrie completed her clinical training in Miami, Florida, and her career has taken her through an unusually broad range of clinical environments.
She has worked in hospitals, inpatient mental health facilities, forensic settings, school boards, community mental health centres, and private practice. Across these settings, she has gained extensive experience working with individuals at different developmental stages and with diverse clinical presentations and life circumstances.
Dr. Guthrie is a registered member of the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) in the areas of Clinical and Counselling Psychology with children, adolescents, and adults. She is also a member of the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA).
As the founder of Lakeview Psychology, Dr. Guthrie’s approach to care also shapes the broader philosophy of the practice: therapy should be thoughtful and evidence-informed, but it should never lose sight of the individual person sitting on the other side of the conversation.
You don’t need to become a different person before your life can begin to feel different.
Sometimes change starts with understanding yourself more clearly, meeting yourself with a little more compassion—and deciding what you’re ready to do next.
